Vacon has a long tradition in the Marine & Offshore industry which stretches right back to the mid-1990s. VACON AC drives are crucial in M&O applications, offering accurate and flexible motor control, energy efficiency, improved process availability through a high level of redundancy and better overall process control. Our drives are also instrumental in reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx), sulfur oxide (SOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, fuel consumption and noise. Vacon is always cooperating with several major system integrators, and we’ve developed a number of groundbreaking solutions which have transformed application processes onboard and in the harbor. VACON Standard AC drives are certified by the major classification societies and offer specialized functions depending on the kind of application onboard.

Applications

As a robust and versatile product, VACON NXP has been Vacon’s key to success in the Marine & Offshore industry, perfectly suited to scenarios where vibration, temperature, redundancy and noise levels place high demands on processes. VACON NXC low harmonic AC drives have also frequently proven their worth, with many applications in the industry requiring a low level of harmonic distortion (THD). We have pioneered the use of liquid-cooled Active Front End drives in propulsion and cargo pump systems, pipe-laying tensioners, abandonment and recovery (A&R) winches and oil exploration fibre cable winches. Conversely, a number of our liquid-cooled drives come with IP66/UL Type 4X protected enclosure, which makes them suited for installation in demanding applications. Dimensioning is often an issue, particularly for propulsion, winches and steering gear applications; VACON AC drives limit the torque and speed to avoid overloading and thus minimize the need to dimension mechanical equipment. We provide drive solutions for propulsion applications featuring main propulsion thrusters and auxiliary thrusters, as well as a range of power solutions which integrate shaft generators and standard generators. In dynamic positioning, diesel-electric propulsion systems are more energy efficient under changing conditions than normal direct-driven diesel systems with variable pitch propellers. As the M&O industry is operating 24/7 across the seven seas, Vacon’s global service support network is an asset.
